ALA Involvement

While the ways in which I’ve been involved with the ALA over the years are described below, I’d like to highlight the achievement that gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment…my participation as a Committee on Legislation team member, and later as Chair of the Privacy Subcommittee, responsible for developing resolutions passed by the ALA Council in response to privacy-related sections of the USA Patriot Act. Through the defense of our right to privacy and those of our libraries’ users, we as an organization called attention to a dangerous incursion on the Constitution. ALA, with the support of its members, showed great courage at a time when few others were willing to speak with such “a loud voice.” ALA’s leadership position on these extremely important issues of privacy rights and free and open access to information rallied individuals and communities to make their concerns known. Our organization and its members affected the course of this nation’s history.
